Sustainability: Recreation and Community Projects:
Hamilton Indoor Recreation Center, Moscow, Idaho: The offset sloped roof forms of the Hamilton Indoor Recreation Center were originally conceived as a design element to relate to the adjacent aquatic center and the gabled roofs of the surrounding residential neighborhood. With clerestory windows in the vertical plane of the roof step, these forms created an opportunity to allow natural daylighting to immerse virtually every space in the facility- the offices, entry lobby, multipurpose room and even the gymnasium and locker rooms where the challenge of daylighting often causes these spaces to be ignored. The daylighting reduces energy consumption for lighting and creates a better environment for both work and play.
Lynnwood Recreation Center, Lynnwood, Washington: The existing swimming pool at the Lynnwood Recreation Center has a unique removable canvas roof that allows the summertime outdoor pool to become an indoor pool the remainder of the year. However, the canvas takes an entire day to remove or reinstall and is a significant source of heat loss from the warm pool environment during the cooler seasons. Renovation of the existing pool, now under construction, includes replacement of the canvas with a new permanent partially retractable translucent roof. The new roof system will reuse the pool’s existing roof structure, reducing the amount of waste during the renovation. The retractable roof preserves the highly desirable outdoor pool environment for swimmers in the summer and nearly eliminates energy consumption for HVAC during the warm months. The improved thermal envelope of the permanent roof during the cooler months will have an even greater impact on energy savings. Daylight will fill the space, allowing swimmers to bask in the sun during the entire year, further reducing energy demand for lighting and creating a dramatic contrast to many indoor pools originally constructed during the era of this facility. The goal for the complete renovation project is to achieve LEED Silver certification.
