Sustainable Architecture: Healthcare:
Group Health Bellevue Medical Center
, Bellevue, Washington: Recognizing that a connection to the natural environment can have a positive impact on healing and recovery time, the Group Health Bellevue Medical Center connects visitors to the natural environment through large expanses of glass and extensive use of sustainable wood products on its interior. As landscaping matures over time, green views will be available from throughout the building and the landscaping will become an urban oasis for birds that had abandoned the original paved urban site, formerly a parking lot. The added landscaping and water features create a healing environment for patients visiting the facility. Other sustainable features include the use of sustainable wood products, low-VOC paints, a reflective white roof membrane, advanced commissioning and provisions for alternate forms of transportation.
Women's & Children's Center
, Kootenai Medical Center - Coeur d'Alene, Idaho: A 5,000-square-foot green roof and rooftop plaza is accessible to patients, staff and visitors from the third floor of the Women’s and Children’s Center. The low-maintenance modular green roof system increases roof insulation, provides evaporative cooling, and reduces storm-water runoff and heat-island effect. The most significant benefit, however, is the visual and physical connection to the natural world. This connection provides a healthy working environment and a positive healing environment that helps fulfill the hospital’s healing mission.
