NAC|Architecture Addition
, Spokane, Washington: Daylight harvesting was a driving sustainable design consideration in NAC|Architecture's office addition, which is LEED Silver certified. Daylight-harvesting strategies provided views to the exterior for all occupants of the addition and became an important factor in achieving LEED energy-efficiency credits. Maximizing daylight-harvesting opportunities melded well with the architectural and engineering design concepts of the studio addition, which was designed as a modern, urban in-fill project. A large glass curtain wall is the dominant street-façade design element. All glazing is low-e glass. To control glare, motorized roll-down shades are integrated in the building's curtain-wall details. Large translucent skylights with a low u-value provide additional daylight harvesting in the third-floor studio. New windows were cut into the original historic masonry structure to increase views and daylight-harvesting opportunities for those occupants. The interior lighting system consists of long-life, high-efficiency, low-mercury, low-harmonic, pendant-mounted fluorescent T5 luminaires with automatic daylight-harvest dimming. The Lutron ECO-10 system will allow for future adaptability by simple programming means. The system monitors daylight and adjusts artificial lighting levels accordingly.
